Members of the Board of Directors for the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority also serve as members of the Source Protection Authority for the Cataraqui Source Protection Area. The 17-member board, and a representative of the Township of Frontenac Islands, oversees the local source protection planning process in the Cataraqui Source Protection Area. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change directs and provides funding for the source protection planning process in the Province, while local Source Protection Authorities receive and spend the funding according to an approved budget.

As required under the Clean Water Act, the Source Protection Authority is responsible for providing administrative, technical and scientific support to the Cataraqui Source Protection Committee during the planning process for the source protection plan. The Source Protection Authority reviews work completed by the Source Protection Committee to ensure that it meets the requirements of the regulations. Under the Cataraqui Source Protection Plan, the Source Protection Authority is responsible for implementing several policies, which generally include: collaborating on research studies, education and outreach programs, and incentive programs.The Source Protection Authority is also required to report to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change on the implementation of source protection policies, as required by the Clean Water Act.
